What Gloria Steinem Taught Me

Ugh! The gut punches just keep coming. Last week, the marvelous Dolly Parton, and this morning, when I opened the digital New York Times, I learned that Gloria Steinem, and the marvelous Cassandra Wilson had died too.
Over the course of my life, I’ve admired each of these women: Parton for her talent, kindness, brilliance, wit, vivaciousness, philanthropy, business acumen, and sense of humor; Wilson for her sultry, soulful, and distinctive contralto. Wilson sounded like no one else, and no one else sounded like Wilson. She was gifted with a uniquely beautiful voice.
Among them, Steinem has most meaningfully shaped my life. I likely first learned about Steinem in the mid-1980s during my feminist awakening in my first undergraduate women’s studies class at Georgetown. There was so much to admire about this ardent intersectional feminist, activist, and self-identified “entrepreneur of social change.”
