How can quantitative intersectionality research move beyond description and toward stronger causal claims, especially as it relates to studying the structural determinants of health and health inequities? This two‑hour virtual training will introduce the “descriptive‑to‑causal” continuum in intersectional health equity research and situate common study designs and analytic approaches along that spectrum. Using illustrative examples, we will discuss when and why to use particular methods, what kinds of questions they can (and cannot) answer, and how to make transparent, defensible inferences about mechanisms and interventions. Participants will leave with a clearer roadmap for aligning their research questions, data, and analytic strategies to support more rigorous, action‑oriented intersectional science.

  • Introduction to the “descriptive” to “causal” continuum
  • An overview of appropriate analytic methods, including when and why you may want to use a particular analytic method; all examples presented will be within the context of quantitative intersectionality research
